Untreated dandruff and an itchy scalp could indirectly be causing your hair loss. On the flip side, hair regrowing medication like minoxidil may cause you to get dandruff in the first place. Fixing your dandruff problem may even alleviate hair loss, so it may be time to get to the root of the matter!
Yogurt can promote healthy hair. Applying yogurt and lemon can fight dandruff. Yogurt with egg whites and olive oil can hydrate your strands. A mask of yogurt and banana can tame frizzy hair while a mask of yogurt and strawberries can prevent oily scalp. A paste of yogurt and fenugreek powder can prevent hair loss.
For centuries, fenugreek has been used as a traditional remedy for hair loss. On the skin, it fights dandruff and irritation, so you won't keep scratching and breaking hair. This spice even protects the skin because of its anti-aging effects. To benefit from fenugreek, make a hair mask with its seeds and water. Add peppermint essential oil to boost circulation and hair growth. For extra hydration, mix fenugreek with coconut milk.
Massage your scalp with any of these: onion juice, garlic paste mixed with honey, honey mixed with water (80-20 ratio), fresh aloe vera gel, tea tree oil, lemongrass oil mixed with grapeseed oil, amla juice, or a paste of hibiscus leaves. These inhibit the dandruff-causing fungus Malasezzia, and some of these also nourish the scalp with minerals like sulfur or healthy amino acids.
Oil extracted from grape seeds is suitable for cooking as it has a high smoke point and a subtle flavor. Grapeseed oil has great moisturizing and nourishing properties, making it popular for skin and hair care. Consuming excessive grapeseed oil may, however, be risky as it contains high levels of omega-6, a fatty acid that could contribute to inflammatory conditions such as heart disease and cancer, among others.
Specks from dandruff are flakes of scalp skin that easily fall off. If you have lice, those specks are parasites clinging tightly to your hair. Itching is a common trait of both. Dandruff can be caused by seborrhea or even be a reaction to hair products. Lice come from close contact with someone who already has it. Anti-dandruff shampoos, honey, neem, and tea tree oil work on dandruff; pesticidal lotions, manual wet combing, petroleum jelly, and neem can treat lice.
Onion juice is an effective remedy for alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition. If your hair loss is due to bacterial or fungal infections and free radical damage, the sulfur compounds and quercetin, an antioxidant, in onions can help. The sulfur can also strengthen your hair. Onions also spur the activity of your natural antioxidants against hydrogen peroxide that causes hair graying. Apply the juice directly on your scalp.
Dandruff is a condition where there is excessive flaking and shedding of skin, usually caused by an imbalance in Malassezia fungus levels. Lemon juice contains citric acid, vitamin C, flavonoids and trace amounts of zinc, with antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal properties. It has been found to be 70-75% effective as a short term remedy for dandruff.
