Reiki can successfully assist with any condition that is caused by emotions. It is advisable to opt for reiki if you are experiencing high levels of stress, an emotional trauma, unexplained symptoms or if you are recovering after a surgery. Reiki is not suitable for broken bones, whiplash, hypothermia, or diseases that require immediate surgery or are caused by unfit lifestyles.

You may have heard a lot about ‘miraculous’ healing that people experience after just one ‘reiki’ session. However, you must understand it happens to very few individuals. Is reiki therapy right for you?

What Is Reiki Healing?

Reiki therapists apply the prana energy (Chi in traditional Chinese medicine) through their hands to specific points on the body to achieve balance and initiate self-healing. But the body might be beyond repair or the damage may be so extensive that it could take months or even years for the healing effect to be noticeable.

To understand if reiki therapy is right for you, you must understand how any disease is developed. It always starts with stress. Stress can be physical (broken bone), environmental (too hot, too cold) or emotional (anger, envy). Stress creates the block. The block stops the energy flow to organs and organs start to malfunction. And finally, a disease develops manifesting itself in unpleasant symptoms.

As a primary treatment option, reiki is a very bad choice for broken bones, whiplash injury, hypothermia, or a heatstroke. But it can successfully assist with any condition that is caused by emotions.

How Do Emotional Imbalances Manifest In Disease?

Both western medicine and Ayurveda agree that most of our diseases are caused by high levels of stress. We are not discussing the biochemical effect of stress. Emotions are energies. When we experience an emotion that is unbearable or we consider shameful, we try to stop it.

Each emotion has designated marma points that it uses to go into the physical body. When we let an emotion go in, it is balanced and healed by our bodies. When we resist, it accumulates over the marma points and prevents the smooth flow of the energy. It creates a block.

These blocks prevent prana from reaching our vital organs, making them slow down or break. According to Ayurveda, one cannot separate the physical body (bones, muscles, skin) from the energy body. Think about the physical body as a PC and the energy body as a software that runs the PC. They are dead without each other. The blockage acts like a bad software upgrade that makes our PC malfunction or stop working completely.

How Does Reiki Work?

The energy body is ‘attached’ to the physical body through a system of marma points. They are located on the skin in approximately the same positions as acupuncture points. There are about 200 (depending on the school) marma points. Marma points help to deliver prana energy to each molecule and organ. They affect our emotional and physical health.

When reiki therapists (after appropriate evaluation) choose the marma points to work with during a session, they apply energy through their hands to the marma points to ‘melt’ the block and to restore the unobtrusive flow of prana. Some blocks can be removed in just one session, some take many sessions to clear.

Now, what happens when the energy flow is restored? The physical body starts the process of self-healing! But we must remember that our bodies change slowly. So in many cases, the positive change might take days or months.

When Is Reiki A Bad Choice For You?

  • Any traumatic event that causes irreversible (without aggressive treatment) damage to the physical body.
  • Last stages of any disease that require immediate surgery or aggressive treatment.
  • A disease that is caused by bad lifestyle choices.

You can still use reiki in the above situations to support the recovery before and after mainstream treatments or to deal with addictions.

When Will Reiki Work Best?

  • Traumatic emotional events (death in the family, separation, divorce, shock, etc).
  • General unhappiness and high levels of stress.
  • Recovery after surgery or disease.
  • Prevention – stress causes many diseases. Regular reiki sessions lower stress levels and help the body to function more harmoniously.
  • Unexplained symptoms and when western medicine can provide only symptomatic treatment.

Reiki therapy does not include any talk therapy and can be a very good choice for people who do not want to spill their secrets to the world. Reiki therapists are interested only in the emotion (not the event) that created the blockage and choose marma points to work with based on the evaluation (muscle testing, pendulum) at the beginning of the session.

Reiki sessions are very relaxing and are done in complete silence. People often feel relief after the first session. But it usually takes 5-8 sessions for the permanent change to become noticeable.
