5 Steps to Go From Dreamer to Creator…

I remember a friend that would daydream all the time of what he was going to do with his life.  He would imagine making all kinds of money and what he was going to buy with it.  He think of all these ideas of how he was going to make the money.  In-between his dreaming, he’d walk to the store and buy a lottery ticket.  He never realized his dream before he passed away.

All of us, one time or another, would dream of certain things we wanted out of life.  So many people I’ve talked to told me that they dreamed one day of becoming a published author.  Year after year they came up with an idea for a new book.  Just like my friend, that is all they had.  Ideas.  And ideas that sit idly by and nothing but dreams.  And dreams can disappear.  Many of these people who dreamed of being a published author didn’t even bother to practice developing their writing skill.

Dreaming of something you want to happen won’t get you anywhere.  You can dream and dream and dream and still it won’t happen.  I’m not knocking the dreamers either.  Every single idea starts with someone that had a dream.  The difference is that the dreamer needs to transition into the creator.

“Visionary people face the same problems everyone else faces; but rather than get paralyzed by their problems, visionaries immediately commit themselves to finding a solution.” ~Bill Hybels

It’s the creator (and visionary) that turns dreams into reality.

So, you may have a dream and now it’s time for you to become a creator. Here are five steps for you to do just that…

    1. Seal your dream with a powerful and concrete vision.  Imagine it as if it were real.  That includes the finished product of your creation and all the steps that you did to get there.  An artist already knows what he or she wants to create long before the first step is taken.
    2. Write down what you see and turn that into a daily plan of action. A plan helps to keep you on track.  Make sure it’s a natural plan that can adjust when needed.
    3. Take immediate and consistent action, day in and day out, while keeping focused on your goal.  Everything counts with the action you take or don’t take. Even the smallest details.  Give each day your best effort.  If you have to learn a new skill in order to help you turn your dream into a reality, then do it.
    4. You’ll make mistakes, learn from them and make the necessary adjustments.  The best of the best creators realize they are not perfect.  I know that when I wrote the first draft of my book, Mind Your Own Fitness, a lot of mistakes were made.  I had others look it over and they pointed out the mistakes.  And guess what, the final product still had mistakes.  It happens.  And I learned.
    5. Grit it out.  You’ve got to have the heart, belief and determination to create your dream all the way to the finish.  It’s going to take work and lots of it.  There will be days that are so boring and mundane that you wonder if you still have the passion to continue.  Well, guess what?  Every single successful creator had grit during those times when things looked bad or passion seemed lost.

“I’m convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance.” ~Steve Jobs

It’s time to either become a creator that’s successful or stay a dreamer.  No amount of positive thinking will change the fact that you still have get up off your duff and start creating.  That includes creating a new you as well.  So, go do it NOW!!!
