Proprioception is the sensory ability to know where your body parts are located. If there is a lack of ability in doing this, it indicates nervous and spine disorders. Chiropractic helps heal the spine and nervous system. In fact many athletes use chiropractic care to maximize proprioception ability, which leads to lesser injury and better performance.
Proprioception is the ability to sense stimuli arising within the body regarding position, motion, and equilibrium. In other words, you know where your body parts are located in space and time.
Have you ever found yourself accidently biting your tongue, or banging yourself into the furniture? Or maybe you find yourself tripping or stumbling. These can all be signs that your nervous system is being interfered with and causing problems with your proprioception.
Loss Of Proprioception
The most common cause of a loss of proprioception is spinal misalignments that sort of scramble the electrical information that travels throughout the body. So your brain might be signaling you that your tongue is in one place when it’s actually in another. So you bite your tongue. It may be telling you your foot is in one place when it’s actually in another which can cause you to trip or stumble.
Test Your Proprioception
You can try this at home. Close your eyes and try to bring both index fingers together? Can you do it? If so congratulations, if not you may have some compromise of your nervous system.
Chiropractic Can Improve Proprioception
Doctors of chiropractic specialize in taking stress off of the nervous system and normalizing body functions. Since your nervous system controls everything, any function can be compromised by a spinal misalignment. I have seen patients whose balance has improved greatly with simply addressing issues in the spine.
It is also common for spinal misalignments to cause headaches, digestive disorders, hormone imbalances, vision problems, etc.
Many professional athletes, as well as those concerned about performance, will seek chiropractic care because when the nervous system is balanced and proprioception is maximized; injuries are much more unlikely and performance is increased. As a matter of fact, some of the greatest athletes in the world utilize chiropractic to keep them functioning at the highest level possible.
If it has been awhile since you had your spine and nervous system checked it is a great idea because if problems are found and corrected early it can prevent issues from becoming permanent.
How Does The Spine Become Misaligned?
Well, it can happen due to a thousand reasons, but it can even start at birth. Coming through the birth canal is no walk in the park and can cause spinal problems that can cause the child to have problems throughout her/his life.
Many of my patients bring their newborns in for a checkup right after their birth. It’s actually quite effective for colicky babies. Many children who have frequent ear infections, for example, will have misalignments in the neck region. This can compromise the drainage of the ear and reduce the effectiveness of their immune system as well.
If you think about it, everyone would function better without interference in their nervous system than with it. The simple act of removing stress from the spine will go a long way to improving function not only in the spine itself but in all the areas that the spine goes to as well.
