When You Have Hair Loss Due To Hypothyroidism

What Is Hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism is a condition that is characterized by abnormally low thyroid hormone production in the body. Since the main purpose of thyroid hormone is to maintain the metabolism of the body, people suffering from this disease often suffer from symptoms associated with a slow metabolism. Also, because thyroid hormone affects the growth, development, and many cellular processes, inadequate thyroid hormone has widespread consequences on the body.

Symptoms Of Hypothyroidism

There are several symptoms of hypothyroidism, such as fatigue, weakness, cold intolerance, muscle cramps and frequent muscle aches, constipation, depression, irritability, memory loss, abnormal menstrual cycles, decreased libido, weight gain or increased difficulty losing weight, dry hair, dry and rough skin and hair loss. Read more to know about the reasons for your hair loss due to hypothyroidism.

Is Hypothyroidism The Reason For My Sudden Hair Loss?

The lack of sufficient amount of thyroid hormone in your body causes sudden hair loss, but again this is a common symptom of hypothyroid and it is not a permanent problem as long as you get the treatment you need.

How Do Thyroid Hormones Cause Hair Loss?

First of all, in general, the hair follicles follow a natural cycle of hair growth and resting phases. So most of the time, most of your hair is growing while only a small portion of it is at its resting phase. But when changes in the body (hormonal imbalance) affect that cycle, it results in too much hair at resting phase, which means that not enough hair is susceptible to growth. This also results in excessive hair loss, thinning hair or balding. This process could be affected by any disorder, including thyroid problems.

Because hair growth depends on the proper functioning of the thyroid gland, abnormal levels of thyroid hormone produced by this gland can result in the changes in the hair growth. When there is too little of thyroid hormone being produced by your body, there can be hair loss, not just on the scalp, but anywhere on the body.

In 2008, the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism published evidence that human hair follicles are direct targets of thyroid hormones. This research also demonstrated that the thyroid hormones T4 and T3 modulate multiple hair biology parameters from cycling to pigmentation.

This is more than just hair loss and dry skin. If you have been diagnosed with this it needs to be addressed. Google it and look at the long term effects. I waited for over 3 years and I now have osteoporosis. Please don't hesitate to contact your doctor and have the blood tests run.
