Why Does My Hubby Lose Weight Quicker Than Me?

Men have more muscle mass and burn calories faster. Women burn 5-10% lesser calories for the metabolic needs than a man of the same physical measurements. Food preferences also matter- men consume more meat while women enjoy refined carbs which add weight. Women also eat more sugar filled foods to soothe emotions like depression and anger.

Curejoy Expert Dipti Mothay Explains:

Food Preferences

One big difference between the sexes lies in food preferences, according to Katherine Tallmadge, RD, the author of Diet Simple. “Men love their meat, and women are attached to carbohydrates,” she says.

Men Are Bigger To Begin With

Men lose weight faster because they are bigger to begin with. Since men tend to carry around more height, weight, and muscle mass than women, their bodies need to burn more calories to function.

Men Have More Muscle Mass

Men are more prone than women to build muscle due to higher levels of the hormone testosterone. Because men have more muscle mass they have a higher resting metabolism, meaning they burn calories at a faster rate to keep their bodies functioning (e.g. to keep their heart beating, lungs breathing, brain functioning, etc.). It’s estimated that a woman burns 5 to 10 per cent fewer calories for the body’s metabolic needs than a man of the same height and weight.

Believing In One’s Ability

Studies have also revealed that men are more confident than women in their ability to lose weight and achieve a weight loss goal. Believing in one’s ability to make change is a key factor in committing to a goal, and ultimately, reaching that goal.

Comfort Foods

Preferred comfort foods may also factor into weight loss success. Women are also more likely than men to turn to foods to soothe emotions such as depression, anxiety, anger and boredom.
