At the same time, it’ll help them sort out their thoughts. So try to listen without interrupting or changing the topic. It doesn’t even matter if you don’t know the “right” words to say. They’ll feel better knowing that you care enough to listen.
2. Pay Attention
This is right up there with listening. If someone needs to vent, keep all eyes on them. Put away your phone and turn off the television. Look at the person when they speak. Not only is this respectful, but it shows that you are willing to help.

Asking questions about someone’s issue will show that you’re actually listening. This can be anything from “What will you do next?” to “Is there a way I can help?” It will get the conversation going and show that you empathize for their pain.
