 Curejoy Expert James Dudley Explains:

Lack of sleep is reported as one of the biggest reasons for dark circles, but it is not unusual for under-eye circles to appear even after a person gets enough sleep. Exhaustion and fatigue is not the only reason behind dark circles, like most of us believe. According to the Mayo clinic, lack of sleep doesn’t really cause under-eye circles; it just makes under-eye circles and shadows you already have more obvious because lack of sleep makes you paler and more hollow-eyed.

Idiopathic cutaneous hyperchromia of the orbital region (ICHOR), periorbital hyperpigmentation (POH), Infraorbital hyperpigmentation are the medical terms used to describe dark circles.

The various causes for this symptom may be:

  • Allergies
  • Contact dermatitis
  • Atopic dermatitis (eczema)
  • Fatigue
  • Heredity — dark under-eye circles can run in families
  • Lifestyle choices, such as stress (physical and emotional), smoking, excessive/chronic drinking of alcohol.
  • Pigmentation irregularities
  • Rubbing or scratching your eyes
  • Sun exposure, which prompts your body to produce more melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color

Other factors also contribute to this condition:

  • Including skin redundancy
  • Melanin deposition
  • Chronic inflammation/edema
  • Increased vascularity.

How to effectively get rid of under-eye circles?

Knowing the cause will help you get rid of the problem. For example, if allergies are the cause, all you may need to see results is a more effective allergy medicationor you may reduce the amount of caffeine in your diet in order to get the rest you need. In some cases, dark circles are hereditary, for which there aren’t any remedies.

Dark under-eye circles usually aren’t a medical problem, and home remedies for dark circles under eyes may be all you need to help manage this condition. Fortunately, there are a few tricks you can use to reduce the puffiness and skin discoloration that make dark marks under the eyes more noticeable.

If you’re looking for an all-natural way to get rid of dark circles, try applying any of these for 10 to 15 minutes every day.

  • Cucumber slices
  • Chilled tea bags
  • Ice cube wrapped in a soft washcloth to your eyes.
  • Cotton balls dipped in rose water or chilled water
  • Different pastes containing ingredients like lemon juice, tomato, milk, nutmeg, almond oil and lime juice have been found to be effective.

For long term:

  • Eating a healthy diet will help boost your energy and ward off illness
  • Reducing your salt intake will also help improve the look of your skin, since too much salt can cause the body to retain water in undesirable places.
  • A balanced diet devoid of junk food and full of fresh fruit and vegetables will go a long way in restoring the nutrient deficiencies responsible for some dark circles.

Care must be taken when following home remedies for dark circles, as some of these ingredients can be quite painful if they get into the eyes.

If these home remedies don’t seem to help, you may consult a dermatologist as it may be due to a more serious skin condition.  If you’re feeling very self-conscious about the skin under your eyes, you can try to use makeup to help camouflage the problem. It may be worth trying natural remedies first, however, as different things work for different people.
