Did You Know?

Though some wrinkles are temporary, they may become deeper and more permanent due to ageing.

What are wrinkles?

Wrinkles are a by-product of the aging process. You skin ages all over the body. The skin cells divide slowly, and the inner layer, called the dermis, begins to thin. The protein which causes skin to stretch, and collagen fibers (the major structural proteins in the skin) which support the outer layer, loosen and unravel, causing lines, wrinkles, sagging skin, and spots, on the surface of your face and body.

What areas of your face are the most affected by wrinkles?

Though the skin across the body gets affected but the effect of wrinkles its more pronounced on the face. Prone areas on the face are:

  • Sensitive skin near the eyes
  • Lips
  • Neck

What causes people to have wrinkles?

Muscle contractions during smiling, frowning, squinting, and other habitual facial expressions cause wrinkles to become more prominent.

Other contributors to wrinkles are:

  • Smoking:

Smoking causes wrinkles, lines and age spots.

  • Skin type:

People with light-colored skin and blue eyes are more at risk to sun damage.

  • Heredity:

Some families carry it in the genes and tend to wrinkle more than others.

  • Hairstyle:

You are more prone to wrinkles if you expose yourself to the sun. Choose hairstyles that cover the skin from the direct rays of the sun.

  • How you dress:

The more your skin is exposed to the sun the higher your chances of wrinkles and sunburns.

  • Exposure to sun:

Using sun tanning oils without UV protection over prolonged periods will lead to wrinkled, aged skin.

  • Sleep patterns:

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) cautions that sleeping in certain positions night after night leads to “sleep lines.” Sleeping on your side increases wrinkles on cheeks and chin, while sleeping facedown gives you a furrowed brow. To reduce wrinkle formation, the AAD suggests sleeping on your back.

What can I do to rid or reduce wrinkles – the natural way?

  • Vitamin A Acid (tretinoin, Retin-A, Renova)

Vitamin A acid is a great way to slow the age process. It has been proven and effective to help various signs of aging, such as mottled pigmentation, roughness, and wrinkling.

  • Alpha-hydroxy acids

(AHA)- Also known as “fruit acids”, Alpha-hydroxy acids (glycolic and lactic acid) stimulate collagen production and slow down the aging process. These natural fruit acids lift away the top layer of dead skin cells, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, particularly around the eyes.

  • Vitamin A

Vitamin A is an antioxidant that helps fight negative effects of cell oxidation and prevent wrinkles.

  • Vitamin C

Vitamin C increases collagen production, protects against damage from UVA and UVB rays, corrects pigmentation problems, and improves inflammatory skin conditions. L-ascorbic acid is the most potent form of Vitamin C for wrinkle reduction and prevention.

  • Vitamins E

Is a vital antioxidant that promotes collagen formation, lubricates the skin and fights factors of aging.

  • Beta-carotene

The carotenoid Beta-carotene zaps aging by acting as an antioxidant reducing oxygen damage caused by UV light, pollutions and other environmental hazards like smoking.

  • Sun protection creams and sprays

SPF 30 or higher should be used when you go outdoors especially in the summer.

  • Quit Smoking

Smoking causes wrinkles and age spots.

  • Eat fatty fish

Salmon along with other cold-water fish is a great source of protein and fatty acid omega 3, helping your body maintain young looking skin. Fatty acids nourish skin and keep it plump and youthful, helping to reduce wrinkles.

  • Cocoa

Cocoa containing high levels of two dietary flavonols (epicatchin and catechin) protect the skin from sun damage, improves circulation to skin cells, hydrates, and makes the skin look and feel smoother.

  • Avoid using soap on your face

Tap water strips the skin of its natural oils and moisture that protect against your face against wrinkles. Wash them off too often, and you wash away the protection on your face that prevents wrinkles. Avoid regular soap on your face and use a facial cleanser instead of soap.

  • Eat soy

Soy improves the skin’s structure and firmness.

  • Get Sleep

People who do not get enough of sleep are more prone to wrinkles.

I don't need to treat my wrinkles, they are not a disease! It's part of my appearance which is brilliant! People with low self esteem or perhaps people who feel that they need to look like somebody else and don't embrace life because they are self conscious of their wrinkles, need to love themselves, wrinkles and all! There is nothing wrong with having wrinkles! It's natural!

Egg whites and honey, also banana peel, or plain yogurt on your face for 10 min or so. Real honey not processed has so many properties in it hard to list. Coconut oil is awesome too. Put that everywhere including oil pulling for whiter teeth and strengthening gums. Also oatmeal mix that with honey and yogurt. With the egg whites your skin will look flawless.
