Natural Solutions To Get Rid Of Head Lice

Create a mixture using 1oz of water or vinegar (or even half/half using both) and 6 drops of tea tree or lavender essential oil. Massage into infested hair and scalp, let set for 10 mins. Rinse thoroughly. Use a comb to brush through hair to remove any head lice and eggs. You can also add the essential oils to your regular shampoo and repeat entire process as necessary.

Head lice can be a major frustration, especially when kids get it. Even if one child gets it, that spreads quickly. Head lice are parasitic insects, that’s quite hard to spot, on heads, and sometimes bodies, causing skin irritation and itching.

They are contagious and most commonly spread through close contact, sharing of headware, and bedding. They generally crawl and it’s fast. Many times the recommended protocol for getting rid of head lice are medicated shampoos, however, the chemicals in it may harm your child.

Should you ever be in a position of having to deal with head lice, why not take an all-natural approach?

Essential Oils For Lice

It’s been found that many essential oils are quite effective due to their insecticidal properties. These two seem to be the best and most popular.

  • Tea tree essential oil
  • Lavender essential oil

How To Use Essential Oil?

  • Try using combination of the essential oils listed above by mixing it in water or vinegar and use as a shampoo.
  • Mix an ounce of water or vinegar (or even half) with 6 drops of essential oil. You can also add the essential oil to your shampoo.
  • After application and rinsing, use a comb to brush through hair to remove any head lice and eggs. Repeat entire process as necessary.

Also, make sure to wash any hats, linens, scarves, towels and clothing that the infected person has had contact with. Machine wash and dry them using hot water and in hot air cycle.

If any item(s) cannot be machine washed then you can dry clean them or place in a sealed plastic bag for two weeks. Don’t forget to vacuum furniture and floors to remove any possibly infected hairs that may be present. Soak combs and brushes in hot water for 10 minutes.

Keep in mind that all essential oils are not of same quality. To get the therapeutic benefits shared in this article, make sure to use high quality essential oils.
