Chapped lips can be caused by many reasons but a faulty diet is one of the main reasons for chapped lips. Allergies to cobalt and nickel can cause chapped lips. Taking too many vitamin B12 supplements, may cause you to develop an allergy to cobalt, which may lead to lips that become dry and appear crusty.
Lack of some vitamins, particularly B vitamins, may cause chapped lips. Vitamin B-2, also called riboflavin, is a B-complex vitamin that is needed for healthy hair, nails and skin, including your lips. Deficiency of vitamin B-2 may result in mouth or lip sores, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Good sources of riboflavin include dairy products, eggs, green leafy vegetables, beans, nuts and lean meats.
Consuming too much vitamin A, or taking too many supplements, may cause chapped and pealing lips. If you take more than 25,000 IU of vitamin A per day, you’re consuming too much of this vitamin.
The acid in citrus fruits can also irritate the lips. Even, tomato sauce can be irritating and painful when someone who has chapped lips. Cinnamates, which are used in candy, gum and toothpaste, among other things, can also have the same effect on chapped lips.
In terms of foods, allergies to foods or food ingredients, such as figs or red food dyes, may also cause chapped lips in some people.
