Is My Diet Or Lifestyle The Cause Of Varicose Veins?

A high salt or low potassium diet can cause water retention, leading to varicose veins. Also, foods with a lot of sugar or simple carbs can release high amounts of insulin, causing water retention. Sitting for long periods of time without taking a break or sitting with your feet crossed at the ankles can cause stretching of veins and accumulation of blood in the legs.

Curejoy Expert Dipti Mothay Explains:

Varicose veins are large, raised, swollen blood vessels that are caused due to the loss of elasticity and strength of the veins. They usually develop in the legs and can be seen through the skin. There are a variety of causes of varicose veins which include your diet, lifestyle, gender, age and family history.

While varicose veins generally don’t cause serious health problems, they can be painful and unsightly. They are difficult to prevent, but can be managed with a healthy diet and lifestyle. Staying away from certain foods can reduce the formation of varicose veins and prevent existing varicose veins from worsening.

Impact of diet on varicose veins

High salt or low potassium diet

A high salt or low potassium diet over the course of a lifetime increases a person’s chances for developing varicose veins due to constant water retention. Any food with a high salt content causes water retention.

Foods with a lot of sugar or simple carbohydrates

These types of food cause the release of massive amounts of insulin. Insulin impairs your body’s ability to excrete sodium, resulting in water retention. Eating foods that are high in fiber and potassium and low in sugar will help the exacerbation of varicose veins.

Impact of lifestyle on varicose veins

A sedentary lifestyle is responsible for a wide range of health problems which also includes varicose veins.

Prolonged Sitting

Spending long periods of time at a desk and/or in front of a computer without taking a break or sitting with your feet crossed at the ankles means that blood is able to collect in your legs. This blood is unable to fight against gravity and flow towards the heart due to inactivity so it pools in the legs instead. This causes the veins to stretch over time which then increases the risk of developing varicose veins.
