How Does Natural Cleansing or Detoxification Work?

Natural cleansing or detoxification eliminates toxins, prepares the body for optimal nutrient absorption and supports the body’s internal defense, repair and renewal mechanisms. Toxins can interfere with the normal biochemical pathways necessary for healthy bodily functions. If not cleared from the body, toxins continue to build up and after some time can leave the digestive tract and start circulating throughout the body.

Ayurveda on Detoxification

Ayurveda , one of the world’s foremost natural health and wellness disciplines, places great importance on detoxification. The goal of Ayurvedic cleansing is to balance the three fundamental doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha), digest and eliminate ama (toxins), balance and strengthen agni (the metabolic fire) and restore the body’s natural intelligence. As per Ayurveda, once toxins settle in an area of the body, they can aggravate the doshas or sub-doshas, causing an imbalance in that area of the body. In addition to specific detoxification procedures (such as Panchakarma), Ayurveda also recommends simplifying the diet and, in some cases, adding supportive lifestyle practices [1].

Herbs for Detoxification

Herbs have always played a central role in all natural healing disciplines. Here are a few herbs that are especially powerful for detoxification:

Cilantro

Cilantro helps the body get rid of dangerous toxic metals that accumulate in organ tissues. It is also a very popular herb for detoxifying and removing neurotoxins. Cilantro possesses natural cleansing agents as it may release more heavy metals than the body can efficiently remove, and to prevent any metals from being deposited in the colon [2].

Burdock Root

Burdock has been used for centuries to treat a variety of ailments. Traditionally, it has been used as a blood purifier to clear the bloodstream of toxins. Burdock root is a detox herb used to support and clean the liver and gall bladder. The compounds in the root help to detoxify the epidermal tissues [3].

Elderberry

Excess mucus and a high acidic pH level support various diseases in the body. Elderberry helps in the elimination of phlegm (even that induced by smoking or the inhalation of second hand smoke) [4].

Dandelion Root

Dandelion root filters excess wastes and poisons from the bloodstream, improves blood circulation, assists in lowering cholesterol and helps with anemia. Dandelion root helps purify blood by assimilating nutrients and eliminating metabolic waste products [5].
