Liver Cirrhosis is called ‘Yakrit Vriddhi’ in Ayurveda. The liver is the largest organ in the body, and is essential for body functioning. It makes proteins that control blood clotting and prepares bile to help retain fats and fat-dissolvable vitamins. Any liver disease or malfunction can lead to serious health problems. Now, liver cirrhosis is a chronic disease in which there is continuous disruption and scarring of liver cells. When liver cells are destroyed, they are replaced by scar tissues.

What causes Liver Cirrhosis?

The most common causes of Liver cirrhosis is excessive alcohol consumption. Alcohol causes inflammation in the liver, and scarring or cirrhosis occurs. The other causes of liver cirrhosis are unhealthy diet, Hepatitis, infections, Chronic hepatitis B and D, fat deposition in the liver drugs and toxins.

Symptoms include:

You may experience itchy skin, skin may turn yellow and the colour of urine may turn dark. Metabolism gets hampered in this process which may causes loss of weight or appetite. This may be followed by diarrhea, chronic gastritis, flatulence and pain in the liver region. There may also be difficulty in coughing or breathing.

Ayurvedic remedies for Liver Cirrhosis:

The juice extracted from stems, flowers, roots and leaves of the herb Bhringraj (Eclpta Alba) is very effective for liver cirrhosis. You must consume 1 teaspoon of this juice mixed with honey. This herb contains hepato-protective, anti-fungal and anti viral properties.

The powdered form of the root of the herb Katuki is used in the treatment of liver diseases. The recommended dose is 1 teaspoon of this powder mixed with honey, 3 times a day. In case you’re suffering from constipation, the dose may be increased to double. Ensure that you have a cup of warm water after the dose. This herb helps stimulate the liver in the production of bile and reactivates the tissue.

Aarogyavardhini Vati

This is a compound of Katuki and calx of copper. Take about 2 tablets of 250mg with warm water thrice a day. You may also increase the dose depending on the severity og your condition.

Trishala, Trivara, Vasaka and Kakamachi

These are a few other drugs recommended by Ayurveda for liver diseases.

Natural remedies prescribed by Ayurveda:

  •  Grounded papaya seeds mixed with 1 teaspoon of honey should be taken twice daily.
  •  Carrot juice and spinach juice when mixed together, increase liver efficiency.
  •  Mash fig leaves with sugar and 200 ml of water and consume two times a day.
  •  Include radish in any form in your diet. The juice of radish stem and leaves is also beneficial.
