Among the various milk types and flavors out there, such as soy-milk, low-fat, high-malt, skim and even the all-time favorite chocolate milk; over the years, almond-milk has gained popularity with those who are health-conscious.
In fact, it is also being used a substitute for breast milk and infant formula by some mothers, even though a case study by Pediatrics has warned against doing so.
Yes, vegans may say, “No dairy is the way”, as the seemingly healthy choice. But, in a recent case in Spain, a baby developed scurvy when he was 11-months-old, because he was only consuming almond milk, as a substitute for breast-feeding.1
The reason he was on almond milk in the first place was because a doctor had recommended so, ever since he had some sort of skin inflammation.
More than taking the ‘no-dairy’ belief for a spin, doctors have discovered the real importance for vitamin C. Here’s how.
The researchers of the Hospital of Universitario y Politécnico La Fe in Valencia were bewildered after conducting an X-ray on the baby boy. The scans showed several fractures in his back, legs and even what appeared to be bones that were degrading. They later found out that his mother had only been feeding him almond drinks and formulas for nine months, eventually becoming scurvy.
Scurvy was once a disease found among sailors who had been at sea for months, with close to no access to a nutritional diet let alone vitamin C. It is a chronic but rare disease these days.
It should be made known, that purely plant-based nutrition in children does not suffice or gives them all the vitamins they need to be healthy.
Vitamin C in particular is what helps the body create collagen, a protein in the body used to develop body tissues, bone, skin, teeth, cartilage etc. So, we as humans, especially babies need those vital nutrients found in animal products be it breast milk or milk from cows.
Kids need around 60 milligrams of vitamin C per day, which can be received from breast milk, baby formula using cattle dairy, as well as fruits and vegetables. Moreover, a report by The American Academy of Pediatrics, states that babies need to be breastfed for at least the first six months to a year of their lives, which includes fruit and vegetable purees. After this solid food can be added to their diet.
After the researchers figured out that this was the baby’s problem, they put him on a strict diet filled with milk, fruits and vegetables, cereals, meat, and vitamin C and D supplement.
However, breast milk alone is rich of vitamin A, C, D, E and K, depending on the mother’s health and diet intake, all of which are essential for a healthy baby’s growth. And no close-related substitutes, can make up for that.
