Herbs for joint pain can be taken internally or applied topically to the skin. Sometimes, the effects may not be immediate as taking a regular painkiller. These herbs must and not be considered as a quick-fix cure or taken in place of a traditional painkiller for extreme pain.

Many natural anti-inflammatory remedies often contain these herbs as they are effective to help fight inflammation and swelling, especially in the joints and ease the pain.

5 Ayurvedic Herbs To Relieve Joint Pain

The botanical name of this herb is Withania somnifera. It has a strong anti-inflammatory action which helps relieve joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. Ashwagandha has plant sterols and adaptogens that relieve the symptoms of adrenal gland fatigue.

Ashwagandha helps alleviate pain in your joints, remove inflammation and works as well or better than hydrocortisone but does not have the side effects like immune system depression commonly associated with other pain-relieving drugs.

Vidanga (Embelia ribes) is one of the best Ayurvedic herbs for supporting the body’s natural defenses in the GI tract. It’s helpful for digestive health due to its hot, pungent and bitter qualities.

Vidanga strengthens the digestive fire and eliminates natural toxins from the GI tract, blood, and lymph. It helps reduce excess vata in the colon promoting intestinal comfort. It also regulates the appetite and helps support proper weight management. Its detoxifying effects of eliminating ama (toxins) that leads to inflammation which causes joint pain makes it an ideal herb to eliminate joint pain.

The active ingredients in ginger are called gingerols, which are believed to be the reason for its healing action. This herb is a strong natural anti-inflammatory and the activity of gingerols assist the body to stop the creation of the inflammatory process.

Ginger also prevents the formation of cytokines which are specific immune chemicals that cause inflammation, swelling and pain in the joints including arthritis. A three-year study of people with rheumatoid arthritis found that 75 percent had palliation from their pain and swelling by using powdered ginger.

Turmeric Root Powder

Turmeric is one of the best natural herbal pain remedies and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for hundreds of years to heal the body. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory herb and a strong gout pain treatment. A volatile oil in the spice is as effective in relieving pain, under laboratory conditions, as equal amounts of steroids. The antioxidants in Turmeric fight atherosclerosis by deactivating platelet-activating factor (PAF). This protein seals leaks in blood vessels by stimulating the growth of a protein “net” on which a cholesterol plaque can form.

The health-promoting powers of Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) were so respected by the authors of the ancient Ayurvedic texts that they called it ‘Amrita’ or ‘Divine Nectar’. A powerful nutritive tonic, Guduchi is one of the best herbs for balancing vata and pitta. It has the unusual characteristic of being hot while simultaneously removing excess pitta from the body.

This heat burns accumulated natural toxins purifying the liver, kidneys, joints and blood. Joint pain which is caused by excess vata can be balanced with this herb.  It helps soothe the skin and promotes a clear, healthy complexion. As a rejuvenative, Guduchi strengthens the tissues, bolsters immunity and promotes vitality while calming the mind and supporting proper function of the nervous system.
